While Ausubel's work highlights the importance of a student's prior knowledge, it is Kirschner who makes the stronger point that "what we already know determines what, how, and how well we learn."

Questions:

What do my students already know about the topic of my lesson?
How will I use what they know to help them relate to the new information?
If my students don't already know a lot about the topic I am teaching, what knowledge will I need to pre-teach to make the focus of my lesson more relatable, understandable and memorable?
