By paying attention to the split attention effect, we can greatly reduce extraneous load for novice students. This frees up more working memory for them to think about the actual science (the principles underpinning the lab). Once students become more expert (knowledgeable and confident) in labs, we can fade away these kinds of labs for more traditional looking ones.
